Breezy is a Bride!!!

I got woken up with this little number this morning. No big deal.

I was still sleeping this morning at 8am (with my ear plugs still in) when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I removed my ear plug from one ear and said,

"Can I help you?"

Often times JB will wake me up early on Sunday morning to tell me he is going to the gym, but we had plans today so I was pretty sure that wasn't the case. He replied with

"Maybe...surprise!!!"

And put the ring over my shoulder in front of my face. He said a few other sentimental things and of course asked me to marry him.

What do you think I said?

He told me of all the ways he thought about popping the question, he knew this was the only way he could do it without me smelling it from a mile away. He's probably right. That's how well he knows me. That's why he's my boo.

Here is a pic from our first anniversary in Vegas which is also where our love story officially began:

Nice Marketing Plan

I received this little package from a staffing service earlier this week. Often times I receive things here or there from different companies trying to set themselves apart from all the other companies we won't be using either. Sometimes it works to my benefit. This time, notsomuch.

I posted a pic of this on my facebook and joked that these people obviously don't follow my blog, otherwise they would know that this type of "gift" would definitely turn me away from their services. Included in the box is ramen, parmesan cheese, breadsticks, shortbread cookies, italian dressing, and fruit snacks. The card should read "Enjoy your ( insert any number of countless diseases/health conditions here) on us!"

Don't get me wrong, I love me some ramen. This soup with some tapatio and a grilled processed cheese food sandwich used to be an any time of the year staple at my place. Not anymore. I took the liberty of adding up the nutrtional value (or lack there of) of this little lunch box for everyone's information (the parmesan cheese and breadsticks did not have info included on the package and I almost ate the fruit snacks yesterday but they were gross so I threw them out, so keep in mind that these numbers are probably higher):

Calories - 600
Fat - 28g
Sat Fat - 10.5g
Carbs - 72g
Protein - 10g
Sodium - 2180mg

Not to mention each item that had nutrition facts had a laundry list of ingredients, most of which I couldn't pronounce. No.Thank.You. For 600 calories, 28g of fat and 72 carbs, I will be eating something much more delicious than your new take on a ramen salad. Like all of Bucca de Beppo or Olive Garden. If I am going to sabotage myself, I'm gonna make it worth the guilt.

Weekend Wrap Up

Friday was nothing to write home about. All we did was eat and catch up on DVR shows.

Saturday we were up and at 'em.

First we moved our starbuck's Sunday to Saturday so we could visit the local library and get our library cards:

Then we went and returned our Surewest boxes at the customer service center because we made the best move of our lifetime by switching to Dish. Say what you will about Dish, but it's not Surewest and we can get it in our area, so that's all that matters.

I found a dress for our friend's wedding:

I got it at Kohl's. Originally $60, I paid $17.20. You read that right, seventeen-twenty. It was on super clearance and I had a coupon for $10 off. Their wedding colors are black and dark purple, and JB is the best man, so I am sure there will be lots of photo ops.

Since we didn't get enough of a literary fix, we went to Barnes & Noble before heading to lunch at Blue NOMMY! And since we were right by the movie theater and happened to have a couple of free passes, we decided to go see Social Network.

Sunday started with a 9am workout, which is unusual for me because I am still in bed at 9:30 most Sundays. I decided it was more of a sure thing to get up and go with JB instead of trying to motivate myself to go later in the day when I had a bunch of other stuff I wanted to get done. After JB pointed out some weeds in the backyard, I spent the next hour gathering those up and getting them out of the yard. Then I paid some bills and balanced our accounts before heading to WalMart and spending all of our money on groceries and toiletries. For dinner, I made poppyseed chicken courtesy of our friend's recipe blog.

Another lovely domestic weekend under our belts. We both really love having the free time to get stuff done and spend time together.

Ballet Update - Week 7

So, we are almost halfway through the semester, which means it's time for an update. Plus, I had someone ask about it today, which means I need to get it together and get back on the blog-wagon.

Remember when I was worried that the class might move too slow and I would have to remind myself that I was there to learn and take it for what it's worth? Well, I never thought I would have the opposite problem. For some unknown reason, there is a small group in the class that are dance majors and have taken every single one of this teacher's classes multiple times. They.Are.Annoying. Look at me in my point shoes. Look at my perfect technique. Bleh. Way to make the rest of us fell self-conscious and inadequate.

Let's start with the important stuff; my leotard doesn't look any better in week 7 than it did in week 1, but I have learned to care a little less. We are all in the same boat here, but some people's boats are more streamlined than others. In regular clothes and gym clothes, I like my muscular legs and lifted, round glutes. In a leotard, I just look stocky and thick. Thank goodness most of the time I am too concerned with my turnout or my balance in relevee to care about what I look like.

Instead of taking the time to instill good technique in all of us, the instructor has decided that since more folks in the class have experience than not, she is going to introduce us to all kinds of stuff we would never be doing in beginning ballet. Luckily most of it I have learned before and have some sort of muscle memory and can manage just fine, but some of it, not so much. And since I have been working out so much and not focusing on my flexibility, my muscles are not wanting to stretch with me. Very frustrating.

Oh, and that routine I mentioned that will be happening at the end of the year...I don't think I will be performing after all. With the class size as big as it is, I have a hard time seeing what the instructor is doing half the time and that leads to confusion and missing counts and just faking it til I make it. Doing that in class is one thing, but doing that in front of an audience is an entirely different story.

I think all of this has led me to realize why I stuck with jazz and hip hop in the first place. Here's to the next 11 weeks!

Holy Brit-gasm, Glee!

If you watched Glee last night you know what I am talking about. Ahhhhhhh-mazing! I love the concept of the performances happening in fantasy land which enabled them to completely re-enact the video to a T. Also, the added bonus of John Stamos rocked my world. The thing that caugh me most off guard did not happen in the episode, it happened on my couch.

Mind out of the gutters, please.

During the first performance by Brittany S. Pierce in her fantasy, JB says "It makes sense they would use her, she is the best dancer on the show. Her and Mike Chang have the best moves."

Um...WTF?

How does he notice this? I hardly ever pay attention to the background people during the show. Although I am glad that they are giving Brittany more speaking lines because she is ruh-tarded and makes me LMAO on the regular.

Here is the string of Brit-Brit's tweets during the show and I couldn't agree with her more:

"Getting ready to watch GLEE! I'll be tweeting along with the episode." -Brit

"Awww Heather Morris is sooo cute! Brittany S Pearce. Ha! She was so fun to work with and was really sweet in person."

"John Stamos is still hot! He looks the same as he did on Full House."

"I like Kurt's bow tie. Bow ties are sexy..."

"I hate anesthesia!"

"Slave: Oh...My...God...!"

"Those little boys are SO cute!"

"I know how hard it is to dance with that snake! Nice job...."

"The Me Against The Music set looks just like the original. Santana does a great Madonna impression."

"Watching Baby brings back so many memories! Feels like yesterday...."

"That's a serious afro ya'll!""Kurt wears some pretty fabulous outfits."

"Jane Lynch scares me."

"I love this version of Stronger. Artie did a great job."

"The GLEE version of Toxic is amazing!"

"Jane Lynch is hilarious and scary all rolled into one."

"Rachel has a beautiful voice."

"I loved it! Thank you guys SO much for making this happen!"

Well done, Glee. Well done.

Aspire to Inspire

A couple of weeks ago I attended a conference put on by the Sacramento Area Human Resources Association (SAHRA). The title of this blog was the theme of the conference and boy was it inspirational! The keynote speaker was a Filipino woman named Sonia Aranza. It's funny that I feel this sort of connection to Filipino people now even though JB is only half Filipino. I obviously had to text him immediately after she mentioned her place of origin.

Sonia opened the conference with a presentation about self-leadership. Whether it was the hormone cycle, or the way in which her words reached me, I found myself fighting back tears several times during the hour she was speaking. I took some notes from the presentation and thought I would share them with everyone here so you can take something from them as well.

Confront your self-limiting beliefs

These can be physical, emotional, spiritual, or educational, but they all have one thing in common; you are letting them hold you back from your full potential.

After elaborating on this, she gave each of us a couple of minutes to pair up with someone near us that we did not know and share (within our comfort level) one self-limiting belief. I shared that in my organization, the majority of management are middle-aged white males, and I think being a woman in my (late) twenties keeps me from realizing my full potential here. I am overcome by self limiting beliefs that they don't think I am capable or they don't take me seroiusly, so I avoid interacting with them until absolutely necessary. They only find out how capable I am when they have to come to me with an issue. Whether or not this is really the case, in my head it is very true and I need to work past that.

She mentioned that fear can be an acronym for two things:

Face Everything And Run
or
Face Everything And Recover

The first one delays progress and compounds the work you need to do. Progress moves at the speed you choose, so choose to recover instead of run.

Then she quoted the Harvard Busines Review by saying that our habits of thinking are the greatest predictor of our success.

Create Your Own Luck!

I have been saying this since I left the conference. JB said something once that really stuck with me, "Luck is when preparation meets opportunity." He has been very good about aligning himself with the right people to get his career headed down the path he wants it to go, preparing himself to take advantage of the opportunities that may arise. Some notes from Sonia:
  • The harder you work, the luckier you get
  • There is nothing you can change except YOU
  • Those who are successful pursue their success
  • We teach people how to treat us
  • Success moves at the speed of relationships

Now, maybe you know some people who just sat around the house and didn't bother to put any work into bettering themselves that got this amazing opportunity one day and became crazy successful, but I don't. The people I know that are successful have pursued it. Making contacts, taking classes, pursuing interests, building relationships. Success isn't like a Jehovah's Witness. It doesn't just come around knocking on your door while you are sitting there in your underwear in front of the computer or the television eating cold pizza for breakfast and ask you to enjoy it's wonderfulness. Get your ass up and create your own luck!

Again, after elaborating, she gave us a couple of minutes with a different person to share (within our comfort level) one thing we would do to create our own luck, whether it be personal or professional. This came at an appropriate time as just the day before I had called and made an appointment to start seeing a counselor (therapist, whatever). No matter what anyone says, I know there is a better me in there and I know there are things that I can work on to make me better for my significant other, my friends and family, and myself. Even possibly a future child. Did it feel weird sharing this with a total stranger? Kind of. But comfort zones don't really get us very far.

Be Intentional!

You are more substantial than you know. Every action, word, decision - no matter how small - impacts someone else. Be intentional in those actions and decisions because they are more important than you think. Steer the canoe in the direction you want it to go, don't just let it toss about in the waves.

Those were the three points she touched on and then she closed with this:

Our Deepest Fear
By Marianne Williamson

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.

We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.

Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us;
It's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we're liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

Word to your mother.

The Book

After my rant about Biggest Loser I had a couple of people asking what book I was referring to that helped educate me on nutrition and get me started on my path to my fitness goal, so here it is:

It has great information about nutrition, recipes using the power foods, and workouts to get you started. I loved it. Hopefully it will help you too.

Biggest Loser is Back! (Rampant Ranting)

JB and I loooooooove Biggest Loser. With him being a fitness professional and me having a newfound interest in fitness and nutrition in recent years, this is like porn for us. Last night I noticed something different though. I used to have so much sympathy for these people, but last night while watching Tuesday nights premiere, I was getting angry.

The first thing I got angry about was the ages of most of these contestants. The fact that 22-27 year olds are that big makes me mad. It makes me mad at their parents for killing them (knowingly or not) from birth to age 18 and it makes me mad at them for not breaking the cycle once they are old enough to make their own choices. It makes me mad at the food industry for promoting foods that are toxic and poisonous. But nothing pissed me off more than the guy who takes 8 different pills for diabetes and shoots himself full of insulin before a meal and then eats a FUCKING PIZZA!!!! I don't know that I cuss on here often because I like to keep this open to all ages, but that's how mad I am about this.

I say to JB, "I know that we are not overweight, but we hear what poeple say and read the information for ourselves that this stuff is killing us. And yes, processed cheese foods, fried foods, and other high fat/high carb/high calorie foods are gawd damn delicious. But we make the choice, as hard as it may be, to avoid those foods most of the time. We haven't seen the effects (aside from a couple of lbs here and there) that these foods can actually have, we have only read about them, and we still make the choices to avoid them. These people choose to kill themselves on a daily basis. I just don't understand."

He reminded me that it's easier for us because we have seen the rewards that these choices can offer. We also believe in ourselves and know that if we set a goal, whether it be muscle gain or weight loss, we can most likely acheive it. We have people around us that believe in us; support systems.

I get that, and that's great for us, but I call bullshit.

YOU are the only one that can make a choice to do something or stop doing something. YOU make the choice to say "I've been good all day, I can stuff my face at dinner." or "Just one twinkie/hostess/ding dong/bag of doritos/plate of orange chicken won't kill me." What's one more? YOU are the only one that can ultimately stop the cycle. We justify our decisions to make ourselves feel better about making what are ultimately bad choices. And they aren't bad because I am judging you for them, they are bad because they are killing you! Whether anyone else thinks you are doing the wrong thing or not, YOU are the one that is going to pay for it.

I honestly don't understand how people can see something truly work for someone and say, "that will never work for me." Why not? How often have you heard someone say "Eat right and exercise. That's all you have to do." and then think , well, I tried that and look where it got me. It doesn't happen overnight. There are no pills, superfoods, special concoctions, magic potions or apparatuses that are going to make anything happen in a few days or weeks. It takes a few months to see major changes and this stupid society that is built on instant gratification never sticks around long enough to see the results. They just give up and go back to McDonald's for another cheeseburger, large fries and DIET coke.

People that are as big as the contestants on TBL think that they need this miracle because they could never do it on their own. But doing it the way they do it isn't all that healthy either. It's a good start, a good foundation. Learning about nutrition and exercise is a great start, but most of these people are so emotionally damaged that they also need psychological help to work through all that so they don't go home and eat their feelings (said in the nicest way possible). I like that they had past contestants help with the visits to the different cities, but not all of the past contestants have been able to maintain the weight they went home with, because they don't have the complete package. And ultimately when they get home and there isn't someone there stocking their pantry and fridge with the good foods and screaming at them in the gym for 8 hours every day, it's not as convenient anymore. My friend's blog touches on self-motivation a bit here.

Some of you might be thinking, this skinny bitch has no idea what she is talking about. Or maybe you think I have something against people that are overweight and think they are all lazy or stupid or something. I can tell you, that is not the case. Everything I have written about above, I have done (okay, I have never been morbidly obese). I used to come home from high school after not having eaten all day and eat 20 pizza rolls in one sitting. Or maybe a can of spaghetti o's and a bag of cheese puffs (NOM). Some Tostitos and queso, that's a meal, right? In the summer I would walk to the nearby McDonald's with my $3.22 and get a #2 (2 cheeseburgers, medium fry, coke) and stuff my face with it before I walked home. Breakfasts consisted of pop tarts and sugary cereals. Delicious, right?

My generation is the original processed generation. Less parenting, more food in cans and boxes, TV dinners. Once I stopped being an active kid/teenager, and had my own paycheck to buy my own insert name of major/minor fast food chain here I did for pretty much every meal. I gained the freshman 15, and dating someone at the time who couldn't gain weight if he tried made me eat worse and feel fatter than I probably looked. I can't say I have a healthy body image even to this day.

But one day, about three years ago, I saw a picture of myself that made me realize that I needed to be healthy. I thought I was doing the right things. I would go to the gym here or there, have a salad when I ate out, some of the things people who are trying to "change their lifestyle" instead of diet, do. I bought a training package, and a couple of books, and I got to work. Most of the books out there are still marketed towards those folks looking for instant gratification, but the one I found actually had great information in it. Not only about what I should be eating, but what those other foods I should be staying away from were actually doing to my body. Knowing these things made my choices easier. It took a while, but I started to notice a change in my body. I thought I had made a lot of progress, and maybe I had, but I still didn't like the way I looked in pictures. So I kept going.

I had to realize that eating out is not going to get me where I want to be. Even if you think you are making a good choice, you can make a better one at home and actually know what you are eating. Alcohol has to go. When you realize how many calories are in a beer or a glass of wine it makes it easier to say "why would I want to have 3 of those? That's an hour of cardio." It's not forever, it's just what you need to realize to attain the goals you have. I'm not saying it's easy to make these choices or that I enjoy going to the gym every day (some days, but not every day). But I also know that I used to be a person that didn't think I could do it. I failed PE in high school because I hated running, for crying out loud. Eventually (2 years later), I got there. And it's a struggle to stay there if you don't have a good foundation.

Educate yourself about the choices you make when you put things in your body. It definitely might change the way you eat without a ton of effort. You just might start to notice a difference. And that might motivate you even more. Change the cycle from a vicious one to a healthy one and out The Biggest Loser out of business.

Wishful Wednesday

I don't usually do these, but it just so happened that this morning on my drive to work I had the same thought I have most mornings:

I wish I could be a housewife/house-GF (note I did not say SAHM...yet)

I know, I think most of us would rather not work if we didn't have to, so I am not alone in this. Some people actually don't know what they would do without going to work every day. When I have had this conversation with others, they can't imagine what they would fill their day with.

Well, I do.

I would rise when my body was ready and well-rested. I would enjoy my coffee and a healthy breakfast while watching the morning news and catching up on facebook and google reader. I would begin daily household chores and depending on necessity, plan the week's meals and prepare a shopping list. I would go to the gym for at least an hour, maybe two. On the way home I would stop by the store with my list and then head home for lunch, or maybe get ready to go have lunch with a friend or family member. I would return home and finsish up any chores and then begin preparing dinner. I would try fabulous healthy recipes and the time needed to make them wouldn't matter because I would have all the time in the world. Dinner would be ready by the time JB walked in the door and after eating and talking about our day, he would help me clean the kitchen and we would settle into our places on the couch for our evening of relaxing together.

That's what I would do. And I would love every minute of it. This may surprise some of you that know me as this independent woman that doesn't need a man to take care of her. But that's not really what is happening in this scenario. Sure he is working to pay our bills, but I am taking care of us the old fashioned way that people have strayed away from. I am keeping myself (because really JB couldn't care less) mentally healthy with a clean house, and physically healthy with daily workouts. I am keeping both of us healthy with our homecooked meals because I have the time to shop and plan and find the bargains that allow us to eat organic and well-grown foods without breaking the bank.

Who says you have to have children to stay home? Sure, it gives you an actual reason to stay home instead of people just thinking you are too lazy or unqualified or unmotivated to go to work. Not to mention, starting the SAH thing before kids will make it easier to adjust spending habits and things of that nature before you have a child. Some people plan for one of the parents to stay home and they save for a long time before they execute their plan, but we will never have enough money...ever. Not in America where everyone is too focused on keeping up with the ______s to realize that success isn't always about how much you have.

Okay, now I'm just rambling. But seriously, if we were in a position to make this happen, I would be all over it in a heartbeat. Until then, we will just focus on making it a priority in case we have a child someday.

Future-Wifey Of The Year

Sunday, JB got up at the butt-crack of dawn (6:45am) for god knows what reason. I continued my hibernation as most normal people would on a weekend with no plans. He came in at 8am to tell me that he was going to go to the gym, but I wasn't really feeling that well, so I decided to stay in bed for a while. As I knew he would, he called me on his way home to ask if I needed anything and I requested my grande skinny hazelnut latte for delivery. He asked if I would get the breakfast stuff out so we could get started upon his return.

I took it upon myself to not only get everything out, but time the pancakes, eggs, and sausage so perfectly that I had just finished plating our food when he walked in the door. And of course I had turned on the pregame show for football and also set both channels so all he had to do was press "last" to get to the other game. This alone provided the coveted title of "future-wifey of the year" according to him.

But I didn't stop there.

JB is not the most technologically (okay, maybe common sense) savy person and as soon as the game began, he was running back and forth from the couch to the office to check is ridiculous fantasy football stats. I reminded him that the laptop was right there on the bar and he could just use that instead of running back and forth. He then began moving back and forth between the couch and the bar. I then showed him that the laptop is actually mobile, and moved it over to the couch where he was sitting. He was in heaven!

After I got him all set up with that, I headed off to do the grocery shopping. When I have the time, I actually enjoy grocery shopping and I would rather do that than hear him yell at the tv, so off I went. I got all of the staples and then some stuff to try a couple of new recipes. I returned home and made some banana-chocolate chip muffins that I cannot recommend. They definitely tasted like they were good for you. In fact, I won't even bother posting the recipe here. But for dinner, I made a recipe one of my friends had just sent me that I can't recommend enough:

Feta Chicken Burgers
  • 1lb uncooked ground chicken or turkey breast
  • 1 tbsp fresh oregano
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 7 tbsp feta cheese, crumbled
  • 4 sandwich thins
  • Jar of roasted red peppers
  • Small can of sliced olives
  • 4 leaves of red leaf, green leaf, or romaine lettuce

Preheat grill or broiler

In medium bowl, combine meat, cheese, oregano, and garlic powder and mix well. Divide mixture into 4 balls and flatten into patties.

Grill about 7 or 8 minutes each side

Serve on bun topped with peppers, olives and lettuce.

Weekend Wrap Up - Labor Day Edition

I stole the "weekend wrap up" title from Mrs. Awesome, but she probably got it from somewhere else anyway. :)

For the first, okay 2nd, time in a while JB and I had an entire weekend without plans. And we actually planned it that way. Wait, does that mean we had plans? Dammit. Here is a rundown of our 3 day weekend of domestic bliss:

Saturday:
  • Farmer's Market
  • Visit the new Hanft residence (so cute!)
  • Lunch at Mr. Pickles (my first experience and it was amazing)
  • Quick visit with the Emersons to pick up JB's charger that he left there after his FF draft sleepover
  • Had DC and GF over for dinner. Used the grill for the first time all summer (go figure) to make kabobs
  • Double date with them to see Going the Distance. It was cute, and funny, and male friendly.

Sunday:

  • Starbucks Sunday for breakfast
  • Car wash (first wash she has had all year)
  • Gym. We made it just in time for me to go to Zumba!
  • Lunch at Blue Nami (JB loved it)
  • Got JB fitted for his tux for his friend's wedding next month
  • Nap
  • Blockbuster and burger night (used the grill 2 nights in a row!)

Monday:

  • Yummy breakfast of blueberry pancakes, eggs and turkey sausage
  • Cleaned out garage so we can now park 2 cars in there
  • Cleaned out and organized JB's side of the closet (mine is always that way)
  • JB mowed the lawn while I supervised
  • Nap
  • JB went to the driving range with the neighbor
  • Visited with the neighbors for a while
  • Ended the night/weekend with MBR Monday!

It was a lovely weekend. I'm glad we got that over with because September is going to be a busy month. A couple of weekends out of town and birthday parties to attend. Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend!

What a Croc!

Gotta love my mom. She is cool enough to have an iPhone 4 and know pretty much how to use it, but she is just mom enough to find this to put it in:

Oh yeah, that's a croc, like the hideous supposed-to-be-for-gardening-only shoes, but it's a cell phone case. She wanted me to make sure to get the side view so you could see it's authentic:

See the croc emblem? Sigh....

Fun New Find - Blue Nami

For those of you that knew about this place and never told me, I am saddened. I thought we were friends. I LOVE sharing fun new finds with friends. I find something good an want to shout it from the rooftops.

Blue Nami (aka Blue NOMMY!!) is located in the same food center as Paul Martin's American Bistro on Eureka Road. Another great find located here, Pita Pit.

But, I digress.

Friday night I went there with a couple of my lady friends and it was a first for all of us. We talked about the fact that we are hesitant to try new sushi restaurants without having heard a great review from what we considered to be a credible source. Luckily one of the ladies had one.

The wait for a Friday night was not horrendous. They told us 30 minutes, but it was only about 20. I didn't really care for the loud club music that added to the already loud, chatty atmosphere, but it's Roseville, what can you do? The ambience was very surf's up meets Vegas, which also explains the loud club music.

We opted for a couple of appetizers to get started. The BBQ albacore is something I rarely pass on and was pleased to see that for the same price most places offer 3 or 5 pieces, Blue Nami gives you 7 pieces. They are also more cooked than raw which helps with my food texture issues. We also got the crab stuffed tempura mushrooms. I am sad I did not get pics of these, they were amazing.

We decided to each get a roll and share, so I ordered the Yummi Yummi, which is my standard go to roll (DF shrimp, crab, avocado, cream cheese) and one that looked tasty, the Yellow Belly (sesame chicken and cream cheese). I figured out later that they probably named it that because it's for people who are scared of the rolls with seafood in them. Clever. The last one we got was the Firefly (DF shrimp, crab, cilantro, cashews, avocado, lemon). This was the best of all three and we were all surprised at how the razor thin slice of lemon really made the roll. I am not a fan of cialntro and I couldn't taste it in the roll at all.

For the finale we decided to get one more interesting pick of which I do not know the name. It had DF shrimp, crab, avocado inside and was topped with a thin slice of tuna and pineapple pieces and then drizzled with a yummy sauce. I was kind of scared of this one because of the raw tuna on top, but there was nothing fishy about this roll. It was just the right amount of sweet too. Definitely a good pick. Speaking of pics, the last roll is the only one I got a pic of:

For 3 girls, we had 2 apps, 4 rolls, a glass of wine, and an iced tea. the bill was $54! So awesome. I am just sad that JB wasn't with me because he would have loved that place. I can't wait to bring him there!

Happy Anniversary - Ten 22 Review

Last Monday, the 23rd, was mine and JB's 2 year anniversary. Since it was a Monday and we both got home late (he had a client and I was at ballet) we decided that we would just use the gift card that I won to have an anniversary dinner over the weekend when we actually had time to enjoy it.

We almost forgot about it as we were lying on the couch on Sunday afternoon planning a trip to the market. We had been checking the mail all week for the card and it never came. JB checked before we left for the store and there it was! We decided to scrap the trip to the store since it was already 4:15 and I hopped in the shower so we could be down there by 6:30.

The restaurant is on 2nd street, across from the parking garage, and they validate ($5) if you park in the city garage. The sidewalks were busy with people enjoying the awesome weather, but the restaurant was basically empty when we arrived at 6:30 (the waiter noted that they had just finished with a rush of people). I found it interesting that they have a wine shop in the front of the restaurant when I am pretty sure they don't make their own wine. JB and I agreed that the space had too much of a cafeteria feel with the bright lighting and open ceilings. Would have helped if it was a bit dimmer in there.

As for the menu, I decided on the roasted chicken breast stuffed with mushroom risotto:

And JB went with the burger with pepperjack cheese, bacon, and carmelized onions with a side of sweet potato fries (BEST SWEET POTATO FRIES EVER!!!):

Obviously we both hated our meals:

Mine was way more salty than I would have preferred, but definitely yummy. All in all with our meals, a glass of wine, and two jack and cokes, our bill was only $54. Since we had the gift card, we only had to come up with $4 plus tip. Yay! Afterwards we headed elsewhere for a little dessert:

I let JB choose our dessert and he went with a raspberry cheesecake. So predictable. We split a piece, which means I had 3 bites and he ate the rest.

All in all it was a lovely evening and I would definitely suggest Ten 22 as a place to check out in Old Sacramento. It looks like it might be a great place for happy hours. I think they also do tastings on Thursday evenings.

Favorite New Find

I recently came across a new blog when looking at someone else's blog. I only read a small piece of one entry, but was immediately hooked:

A Black Girl's Guide to Weight Loss

I know you are probably thinking, "She has finally lost her mind. This girl really thinks she's black."

I assure you that is not the case. As you will see when you peruse her "about" section, the blog is not only for black or female readers, but any reader who is interested in learning more about health and wellness. Although after reading her post, Making Wellness a Priority, I did find myself yelling "Amen, sister!"

Ahem...here is an excerpt:

"If wellness were a priority to us… if we were a priority to ourselves… we certainly wouldn’t allow external validation like “I look fine” and “My man loves me the way I am” to interfere with our internal health. (And really, a man who “loves you the way you are” can certainly love you if you wound up losing a little weight, right?) If we were a priority to ourselves, we would do what we can to ensure that we are here as long as possible… and not let discomfort or difficulty or “I’m okay today” syndrome get in the way. We can do that, right?"

Amen, sister.

Ballet - Week 1

Monday:

As anyone who has ever taken a college course knows, the first day is all about the syllabus. There were lots of packets to pick up at the front of the room, one of them being a release waiver. As we went through the syllabus together, I learned that there would be much more of an academic side to this class than I had hoped for. Although I checked the website several times and there were no books listed for the course, the syllabus showed that there were two required texts, along with a dress code of a black leotard, pink tights, and split sole ballet slippers. Further inspection of the syllabus noted a project presentation, a performance critique, and a final exam. We are allowed to have a 3 x 5 note card for that so something tells me it might be difficult.

After class I headed to the bookstore on campus to get my two books and a scantron for the final. I know it's not til December, but this will save me a trip to the bookstore when it's cold and rainy. Much to my surprise and pleasure, the two books only totaled $40.00. Again, if you have taken a college course, you know this is almost unheard of. One of the books is a dictionary of terms for ballet and the textbook actually has different positions and moves with pics and descriptions and also shows the incorrect way to do it so you can see the difference. Pretty helpful actually.

The next day I went to the dance wear store, which was quite a treat. First, apparently they think dancers don't have jobs because most of them close at 5pm. Luckily I found one near my work that was open til 6:30. Second, the store clerk immediately took me to the L/XL section, so that was awesome. I picked a few and tried them on. My torso was too long for all of them and the styles of them are not made for women with curves, especially up top. She brought me one that was labeled "Tall", which fit well aside from all of the side boob that was exposed. Finally, she brought me one that was more breathable, had more coverage, and didn't give me a massive camel toe. Sold. My tights were also XL...yay. I already have shoes from like 6 years ago, so no need to purchase new ones.

Under $40 for my purchases, so in all my class supplies equaled the cost of one used book from the ARC bookstore circa 1999.

Wednesday:

As the day neared 5:00, I was grew increasingly anxious to don my Eurotard and tights. I tried them on the night before, as modeled for my earlier post, and I was not excited about the way the tights cut my body in half as the leotard accentuated the two different sections of my body. I brought clothes to wear over my uniform because I don't think it would be appropriate for the HR Manager to be walking around in that at work, even if it is just to the elevator and down to my car.

With the lovely 108 temperature today, I practically had a heat stroke walking the short distance from my car to the class room. I went into the locker room when I got there to use the restroom which was treat since I had to completely disrobe to do so. I felt a little more at ease when I saw other girls in their uniforms, but I was seriously so anxious about it, I was shaking.

We immediately started the class with basic bar work. We did some plies, tendues, and degages (those should all have accents on them since they are french words, but I don't know how to do that) on the bar and then moved to the center of the floor to learn some of the super basic steps like a pas de bourree and a pas de chat (again with the accents), which translates to "step of the pig" and "step of the cat".

Although the moves were very basic, and I still remember how to do most of them, it's great to start at the very beginning and really learn the movements and lock them into memory. I also talked to the teacher after class and found out that if I am taking the class for pass/no pass credit, I don't have to do any of the projects or papers. My attendance and the final should be enough to get me a pass. Hooray!

We will be building on the steps each week and at the end of the semester, there is an "Evening of Dance" where we will perform them for family/friends if we so choose. Participation is optional, but if you know me at all, you bet your ass I will be up there.

Jen - The Sequel

So, apparently my mom cyber-stalks me and reads my blogs (just kidding ma, that's what they are there for). She saw my recent post about my cousin, Jen, and decided to foward the link to her brother/Jen's Dad/my uncle, Jim. After reading it, he wrote me an email. As you will see below, he told me at the end of the email that I could MyFaceTwitterBlogBook it if I wanted, so here you go:

Bre,

That tore me up... but I needed it.

I still don't understand the need to "bare all" in social networking. Do we need others to "feel us" that closely? Do we want them to? Does it strengthen or weaken our scociety? Does it advance the "Jerry Springer" effect which is quite simply human voyerism taken to the Nth degree?

I started a Facebook page once... lasted about two weeks before I realized I didn't really have time or the desire to hear about a "friend's" 10 favorite movies or wines... I will discuss that with a real friend over a beer and burrito.

Does validation from others help validate ourselves?

But I digress...

That being said, your mom sent me the link of what you wrote and I'm glad she did. That was obviously from the heart and although I don't wish anyone undue pain, I am glad to see that I am not the only one (I knew it though) that feels the way you do about Jen.

I think about her every day.

Recently, a young man that used to work for me took his own life. I won't go into the details, but he had a super bright future and was probably in the top two most intelligent people I had ever met. I went to his parents house and sat with them for a few hours and shared with them the story of Jennifer. I wanted to share with them my experiences and maybe help them with what to expect from friends and family in the near future. I wanted to share with them what I had experienced over the last eight years. In doing that, I connected with Jen like never before... can't even begin to explain it.

I told them how in the beginning, my thoughts of her would make me cry. I would be helping a customer at work and out of no where, it would hit me and I would have to excuse myself and go find a private place to cry. When I use to smoke (never in the house), I would stand outside of my garage and stare at the stars, think of her and cry. I think she told me to stop doing that and that is probably why I quit smoking 7 years ago. Anyway, at some time (I don't know when), thinking of her would make me smile and I started looking forward to my daily thoughts of Jen. I showed them pictures of her and they couldn't get over how beautiful she was. I kept thinking to myself that this was supposed to be about Chad but they kept talking about Jen.

She affects people long after she is gone... that means something.

Whole point of this is... thank you for sharing. Thank you for loving.

You can MyFaceTwitterBlogBook this if you want.

With love,

Unk Jim

To which I responded, "I think that's why I do it." because I received messages from friends who have been through something similar and thanked me for sharing my experience. We are not as unique and alone as we sometimes feel.

In other interesting news, a couple of nights after my visit from Jen, I also recieved a visit from my Papa. I think those two are up to something up there. I'm glad they have each other there even though we miss them mucho down here.

WTF Wednesday - 'tard Edition

Apparently my womanly (read Beyonce-esque) body isn't really made for a leotard and tights. Especially the tights. Notice how they are cutting my body in half? Isn't that nice? Apparently in the world of ballet, I am an extra large. And no, they don't carry a bigger size. I asked.

Pure Awesomeness

I saw these on Jen Lancaster's blog and had to repost them here. So much entertainment and hilarity:

Happy Friday!

Winner, Winner - Chicken Dinner!

OMG, I never win ANYTHING, ever. Last night I went to an open house event to try some of the food for our winter event for work this year and I entered a couple of raffles. I got a call today that I WON!

The prize?

A $50 gift card to Ten22 in Old Sacramento! I checked it out online and apparently it's in the new builing/loft space they built in 2008 and it's received great reviews on Yelp. With our 2 year anniversary on Monday, this will be great!

I'll be sure to let you all know how it is.

I'm so EXCITED, and I just can't hide it

I went to the Folsom Lake campus yesterday to find my classroom so I would be prepared on Monday when I arrive for my first class. First of all, let me say that Folsom Lake is a thousand times more awesome than American River College. I can say that because I spent 4 years there. FLC is so fresh and clean and new. This excites me.

What excites me more is that when I went to the Physical Education building and walked up the stairs, I saw my classroom. When I peeked in the doors, I saw a room lined with a barre and more portable barres in the middle of the room. I almost cried. I am getting emotional just writing this. Dance was such a huge part of my life for so many years and it really pained me to leave it behind for school and work and life. I wish they offered more dance classes after work so I could take jazz and hip hop too, but ballet will have to do for now. I am excited to get back to the basics of the positions and stretching and I am going to try to take it for what it is and not get frustrated or bored with the pace of the class if it's too slow.

If I could afford to take classes at a studio, I would, but all the people I used to dance with and would love to join again happen to dance at the most expensive studio ever. So, for now, the college campus will have to be my fix.

BABY NEWS!!!

Now that I have your attention...

No, it's not mine.

I am going to be an AUNTIE! My brother and SIL are having a baby, due 2/26/2011, which just so happens to be my dad's birthday. I have known since Father's Day and was forced to keep it a secret until their 12 week appointment which was this morning. Here is the first pic of Ziggy:

I am beyond excited since I only live about 15 minutes away from them. Can't wait to find out more about this little one.

Day 10 = Fail

In fear of another migraine I decided to rest this morning. I feel like a total slacker with only 3 days of shred and one day of cardio this week, but I guess that's more than a lot of people can claim.

Going to a cabin with some friends this weekend. Thinking of throwing my laptop and weights in the car too. Better to have the option than not.

Back on track Monday morning with level 2. Have a great weekend!

Jen

Almost 8 years ago, my cousin Jen passed away. She was 20 years old. She was working a temp job with no health insurance and got very ill with what the health clinic told her was just a virus they could do nothing for. They gave her some cough medicine with codeine to help her get some rest and sent her on her way. After being sick on and off for a couple of months, it got to the point where she couldn't keep anything down and was growing very weak. Her mom and boyfriend took her to the local hospital where they admitted her and gave her a medicated mask. We all drove down to Pleasanton to see her, but it was late and they wanted her to get some rest, so we just waved to her from the door way. Early the next morning she had a seizure and went into a coma. Apparently she had a respiratory strain of strep and since it had gone untreated for so long, she had become septic. They kept her on life support for about a week and she had several complications involving blood clots. One made it's way to her brain, which made her essentially brain dead. As hard as it was for my family, they decided to take her off of life support on January 9, 2003. Eight minutes later, she was gone.

You are probably wondering where the hell this is all coming from and why I decided to write about this today.

I stayed home from work today after waking up with a migraine. I thought I might be able to push through it, but I could barely open my eyes with the sensitivity to light. As I laid in my bed trying to go back to sleep, the construction workers building the house next door started their day of work. I made my way to the couch and fell back to sleep. During this painful sleep I had a crazy dream.

I dreamed that my family was on this motorcycle trip with a motorcycle club (this is not that crazy as my parents belonged to one for years). At one point in the trip we all stopped to rest and there was a rest area with couches and stuff. We were all sitting around reminiscing about Jen. At some point she just kind of showed up and was there interacting with us. As long as we were talking about her, looking at pics or videos, she would remain there. But the second we stopped for a moment, she would start to fade away. She would lose her energy and kind of fall asleep and then she would start to disappear. We knew we had to get back on the road, and as much as none of us wanted her to leave, we had to wrap things up there. She started to fall asleep and my uncle wrapped her in a blanket and held her in his arms and just started sobbing as she faded away. We were all crying pretty hysterically and as I started waking up I was whimpering. I sat up, head pounding and kind of let the dream sink in.

Then I started bawling. Like it just freaking happened.

Jen loved purple and butterflies. I have always been a fan of purple myself and already had purple bedding and curtains and stuff before JB and I moved in together. The guest room has my old bed in it, which means it has my old bedding and curtains too. I also made a collage frame for her memorial back then of pictures of us from when we were little until just shortly before she passed away. I told JB that the guest room was kind of going to be my Jen room. So I walked in there after waking from my dream and just sat and looked at the pics and cried, which made my head hurt even worse. I just felt like I really had to sit in the moment and let it resonate because I haven't had a visit (I believe that lost loved ones visit in dreams) from her in so long. I can't even remember the last one.

The saddest thing for me, aside from her life ending way too soon, was that after years of being apart, we had just started being a part of each others lives again. Somewhere along the way our moms (her mom was my uncle's first wife and my mom's BFF) had a falling out. With her living in the bay area, and me living in Sacramento, we only really saw each other on holidays. Once we could actually drive ourselves places, we were both in serious relationships and at that time, she was with someone who was very controlling. So, it wasn't until I was about 20, when we all gathered in Pinecrest to spread my Papa's ashes, that we reconnected and started making trips to see each other. She even drove all the way to Sacramento to get me and drive me back down to her place for the weekend when my license was restricted due to an MIP (minor in possession; got caught drinking at Folsom Lake on the 4th). I was so happy when we reconnected and started making an effort to be a part of each others' lives.

I remember when I got the call from my mom about what happened with the clot and they were going to go down and be with my family when they took her off life support. I didn't want to go. I had already seen her in the hospital with a machine breathing for her and swollen from all of the fluids they were pumping into her, and I didn't want to replay that moment in my head for the rest of my life. But I did leave work and go home. I remember being in my Jetta listening to Christina Aguilera and crying a little. But having experienced so much loss at such a young age, it just didn't hit me as hard at that moment.

I can go a long time without thinking about it, just like the rest of them. But once in a while I will hear a song, or think about the fact that she will never be a bridesmaid in my wedding, and I kind of lose it for a minute. JB has walked in on a couple of these and he just really doesn't know what to do in that moment. The truth is, there is really nothing he can do. I'm sad that he never got to know her.

I'm really thankful for the visit, even if it does cause me a little bit (okay a lot) of pain.

Day 9.5 = Fail

It finally happened. But I think waking up with a migraine is a good enough reason to miss 30 Day Shred. Especially since I am still on the couch. I took something, but it barely took the edge off the pain. Boo.

Tomorrow is my day 10 and I will make it happen.
